am I the only one who when I heard the title I immediately thought vampires? Since San Fransisco is known for it vampires, and I thought he would talk about what people are saying in San Fran about vampires.

Fascism.

The song is about Fascism and how it's nasty angry claws take hold of countries which lead them down a path of destruction and ruin.

Impossible Germany, Unlikely Japan because they went down this disastrous path recently.

It was a prophetic warning in 2007 towards us, the usa, which creeps slower and slower towards the ruinous path of fascism. An ideology without love, compassion, and empathy that feels the need to "erase larger problems".

For me it's all about lad culture in the workplace and sexism against women. Here are my thoughts broken down...

It's happy hour again I think I might be happy if I wasn't out with them

  • This is the most telling lyric, they can't stand the lad culture at work, he'd be happier elsewhere -
  • And they're happy it's a lovely place to be Happy that the fire is real, the barman is a she

  • it's a traditional pub with a female barmaid who probably smiles at all the 1980s sexist banter to make them feel good & keep buying drinks -
  • Where the haircuts smile and the meaning of style Is a night out with the boss where you win, or you lose And it's them who choose and if you don't win then you've lost What a good place to be

  • It's all about image & looking good in front of the boss. You've got to be in it to win it, ie, you've got to be in their gang to get ahead in your career. What a good place to be is dripping in sarcasm. -
  • Don't believe her 'Cause they speak a different language And it's never really happened to me (it's happy hour again) Don't believe her, oh no 'Cause it's never really happened to me

  • This is how I have always interpreted it: Don't listen to the woman in the room because they don't speak the same language ie. they're not as intelligent. Don't believe her if she talks about rape or assault - it's never happened to me but I bet she asked for it type of attitude. -
  • It's another night out with the boss Following in footsteps overgrown with moss

  • Here we go again, another night out with this dickhead dinosaur who still thinks he can do & say what he likes as if it's still the 1950s - I'm thinking of the lead male characters in Mad Men -
  • And he tells me that women grow on trees And if you catch them right, they will land upon their knees

  • Showing the male chauvinistic attitude towards women, treating them like they're all the same and if you do/say the right things you will get to have sex -
  • Where they open all their wallets, and they close all their minds And they love to buy you all a drink, and then we ask all the questions And you take all your clothes off and go back to the kitchen sink What a good place to be

  • The boss thinks he's the big I AM because he has all the money & gets his workers to like him by buying all the drinks for them & probably for the ladies. Then he's talking to the women - they love to buy you a drink, ask the right questions as per previous lyric, and they will climb into bed with you before going back to where they belong - tied to the kitchen sink as a housewife. What a good place to be is sarcastic and has dual meaning because he doesn't want to be in the bar and the women don't want to be at the kitchen sink! -

I don't think this song is about Angie because she had her own car and did the driving, but since reading Set the Boy Free by Johnny Marr, some of the lyrics reminded me of Marr's descriptions of their relationship. "And she's saying how she never chose you." Marr said that upon seeing her he decided that he was going to marry her, and basically targeted her, and staked her out when she was walking to school. "So how did I end up so deeply involved in the very existence I planned on avoiding?" Marr's descriptions revealed some co-dependency,...

Listening to this song while in the dark with headphones on is a AMAZING experience. This song takes you out of your body, it wraps a rope around your soul and it slowly pulls you out, with each note and each chord and at its climax, LIFTS you up in this beautiful musical place (if you have a little fantasy in mind ;)) and it lets you enjoy every moment of every riff and keeps you there until it slowly lets you fall back while playing slowly and steadily, you can enjoy that after-feeling of how great that one part...

I have always thought that it was referred to the very last trip of a tall sail commercial vessel to be put out of service by deliberate sinking. The Captain is crying letting his Ship go, the Crew cry for the (temporary) end of a love-hate bonding with that Ship.
